Bürcdə üçüncü ən parlaq ulduzdur (görünən böyüklüyü +1.86) və səmada 35-ci ən parlaq ulduzdur. Əlkaid Günəşdən təxminən 100 işıq ili məsafədə yerləşir. Səth temperaturu 22.000 K olan bu ulduz, çılpaq gözlə görünən ən isti ulduzlar arasındadır.[9]
Böyük Ayı ulduzunun "sapının ucunda" yerləşir.[10]
