Lithobates sphenocephalus 13 sm uzunluğa qədər böyüyür. Cinsi yetkinliyə çatmış erkəklərin orta uzunluğu 52,9 mm, dişilərin isə 63,8 mm olur. Rəngi yaşıl və ya qəhvəyi olub, belinin hər iki tərəfində sarımtıl zolaq var. Belində və yanlarında yuvarlaq tünd ləkələr var, hər bir qulaq pərdəsində isə açıq rəngli ləkə görünür. Tünd şəbəkə ilə yanaşı, onların tünd piqmentləri və uzunsu xüsusiyyətləri var. Erkəklərin ön ətrafları dişilərdən daha böyükdür. Çoxalma dövründə erkəklərin səs kisələri şişirildikdə qlobus şəklində olur. Səsi "dişli trill", "gülüşə bənzər qurultu" və ya "şırıldayan balon səsi" kimi təsvir edilir.[2]
Lithobates sphenocephalus üzü ləkəlidir və gözləri başının üst hissəsində yerləşir. Yetişkinliyə çatmazdan əvvəl 7,6 sm uzunluğa qədər böyüyür. Dişi yumurta kütləsi qoyur ki, bu kütlə yumurtanın çatma vaxtı yaxınlaşdıqda "beysbol topu ölçüsündə" olur və 1500-ə qədər yumurta ehtiva edir. Bəzi sürfələr yumurtalar və embrionlar inkişaf dövründə pestisidlərə məruz qala bilər, bu da əhəmiyyətli ölüm və inkişaf qüsurlarına səbəb olur.[3]
Bu qurbağa müxtəlif növ dayaz şirin su mühitlərində və bəzən bir qədər duzlu sularda yaşayır. Adətən ot örtüyü və aşağı gölgəliyi olan daha rütubətli mühitləri seçirlər. Adətən suya yaxın yerlərdə tapılır, lakin uzun müddət quru ərazidə də qala bilir. İsti aylarda əksər vaxtını sudan uzaqda keçirir. Əsasən gecə fəaldır, lakin gündüz və gecə, xüsusilə yağış zamanı fəal ola bilər. Qış və yaz aylarında, bəzən isə payızda çoxalır.[4][5][6]
