Bu fəsilə, köpəkbalıqları ilə əlaqəli olan kəlləsi qıkırdaqdan ibarət balıqlar olan batoidlərin dörd dəstəsindən birinə aiddir.[3][4] Onlar tropik və subtropik Cənubi Amerikanın çaylarında tapılır (Afrika, Asiya və Avstraliyadakı şirin su skatları isə Dasyatidae fəsiləsinə aiddir). Tropik Qərb Atlantik və Şərq Sakit okeanın bir dəniz cinsi olan Styracura da Potamotrygonidae fəsiləsinə daxildir.
